We have purchased a Cleverscope CS320A (10 bit) that we wish to use as a spectrum analyser but seem to be having a little bit of trouble setting the unit up. We wish to have a to get the resolution down as low as possible (e.g. 50mHz) so that we can differentiate between a 54Hz signal from a 50Hz signal. Can you please let me know how we go about setting this up?

Hello Shaun,
I have sent you an email about this, but here are the salient points:
1. The scope graph time width sets the frequency resolution. To be able to resolve 50 mHz you have to capture the period of 1 x 50 mHz waveform at the minimum. This is 20 seconds. So the scope width will be 20 seconds or more wide. If you don't want to wait 20 seconds, you'll get less resolution, but a faster result. I attach one file with 20 sec duration, and the other 5 second duration.
2. You'll need to choose the Frequency Span and Frequency Resolution on the Spectrum Display. For a power system, I guess 1 - 2 KHz Span is enough. The resolution is what you need. Note that if the ratio between span and resolution is large, you'll need to process more samples, and that will make things just a little slower.
3. You'll need to get the Scope graph setup to that it captures the signal without clipping. So use a shorter duration, and adjust amplitude until you get a decent signal, but not clipping (which will increase the error). 4. You'll need to adjust the Spectrum display width. The easiest way is to get it about right using the expand/contract buttons
and then overtype the left and right hand ends of the time axis with what you need. Here I have just selected the 20 to start typing a new value:
5. You can use the signal information to give you some statistics, and you can also log the results real time if you go 'Show Logging'.
6. You can use the markers (position the Tracer - tab to change channel), double click, or hit the '1' or '2' keys to place markers and then use the information area to see values and differences.
