Hi,

I've got an older Cleverscope CS328 (serial number DE3084) that I've had for a number of years and which has been brilliant throughout that time. However, the last time I used it was probably around 6 months ago and I'm having some difficulty getting it working again.

As I no longer had the Cleverscope software installed (never having installed in on my current computer), I've downloaded the latest Complete Installation of the software (v4.685) and installed it. I've also run the ROM loader and updated the firmware with "cscope_fw 6466 5338.cmf", the ROM loader now shows firmware version 5338.

The problem that I'm having is that when I start the Cleverscope software it either hangs or crashes after the initial loading Scope Main.vi screen with a blank Cleverscope Control Panel.

Occasionally, I get a a LabVIEW exception: VI "Scope Main.vi" was stopped at node 0x1FC of subVI "Initialize Mouse CS.vi". This makes me think that something may not be configured correctly on this computer.

Has anyone else encountered this? Could you give me some ideas as to what I can try to resolve this?

Computer is running Windows 7 64-bit by the way.

Cheers,
Andrew

Hello Andrew,
Sadly you have a problem we have been unable to resolve - your are using a Microchip Pickit, and the driver for the Pickit looks like a mouse driver. We use the Labview 'Open Mouse' command to interrogate the mouse and find out if it has a scroll wheel. If the PicKit is plugged in, then we seem to be opening the PicKit driver instead, and it crashes. So far we have not figured out how to stop this behaviour - any suggestions anyone?

The only work around is to plug in the PicKit after the application has started.

stuff and bother.
Let us know how you go with this.

Aha!

Great to know what it is, I never would have suspected it.

Gives me a nice excuse to swap my PicKit for an ICD3, haha :)

I can confirm that with the PicKit not plugged in, everything works fine.

Thanks for the quick answer, especially on the weekend. Much appreciated.

In the latest version of the software, v4.689, we have added the ability to prevent the mouse scrolling which stops the interference.

This is done by adding the following lines to the cleverscope.ini file -

[MouseWheel]
Use=0

You can find the cleverscope.ini file in the following places (these are hidden files normally)
In Win 7 x 64 - C:\Users\<your computer name>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Cleverscope
In Win 7 x 32, Vista x32 - C:\Users\<your computer name>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Cleverscope

I had this same PICkit problem in the distant past, but I forgot about it. See the attached screen shots. This time, I saved all the information for future problems. I have two (2) CS328 units (not the "a" model).

The problem is not limited to the PICkit 2. I use a USB/RS232 adapter (FTDI US232R-10-BULK; Digikey 768-1013-ND) and it too causes problems. So now I have to unplug both before starting Cleaverscope and then replug them to proceed. If there is a crash, I have to go through the same process again.

Maybe it would be good to add a note in the documentation (it may be there, I didn't look this time). Or maybe add some information in an error message.
